Ergo Baby Backpack Carrier

Review #4: Ergo Baby Carrier

The ERGO brand is a relatively new brand name in baby backpack carriers, but it has gained wide spread recognition since it sold its first carrier.

ERGO baby carrier is designed to support the baby's weight between his/her hips and thighs. This is different from the traditional carrier support design where the baby's weight is support mainly at the crotch region which results in an unhealthy compression of the spine and hips.

ERGO's design help to encourage a correct sitting position for the baby that encourages proper hip, pelvis and spine growth. ERGO's design also takes care of the user by making sure that the carrier is comfortable to wear.

The carrier comes with thick padding on the shoulders and also a padded waist belt to distribute the baby's weight over both the shoulders and hips. The straps are simple to re-adjust and can be easily used by another user.

The ERGO baby carrier is also allows you to carry your baby both on your front and back. The carrier is also very easy to put on from the front, but some help may be required for using it as a backpack carrier.

However, the carrier is not designed for carrying larger toddlers on the front, although it does provide better support than some carriers out there. The waist strap design helps to distribute the weight, but not fully enough in the front carrying position. The front carrying position is also restricted to the face-in position; which is a favourite position of many babies.

Luckily, the ERGO carrier is designed such that your baby is not lying flat on your chest in the face-in position. This gives the baby space to move around and still turn his/her head to take in the sights around him. However, the spacious cockpit design means that the carrier will not be able to accommodate a younger baby that is unable to sit up on its own.

An accessory called the baby insert is required if you are carrying a younger baby. The baby insert is a specially padded and shaped cushion that can be placed in the cockpit carrier.

It can be adjusted to cushion the baby in the cockpit so that the ERGO carrier can be used with younger babies. But the insert have to be purchased separately and most users have found the insert too pricey for its useful time frame (about 1 to 3 months).

Others have also commented that the insert results in discomfort for their babies. The insert causes the cockpit to become hot and sweaty, and some babies have developed rashes from the heat.

Most users complain about the overly thick fabric and padding design in ERGO carriers. The original idea was to increase padding for comfort, but these padding can quickly become very hot in warmer weather, especially in summer. And if you happen to be using the baby insert, the heat becomes unbearable.

The ERGO carrier is a very comfortable carrier but it is recommended for used with older toddlers who can sit upright and have control of their neck. Besides that, ERGO carriers are also more suitable for cooler climates because of its heavy padding. While they provide much comfort for carrying, they also result in undesirable hotness.

All in all, the ERGO carrier remains a well designed carrier that provides healthy support to both the parent and the child and should be one of the top considerations when purchasing a baby backpack carrier.
