The Deuter brand
line of backpacks is well known and need no additional introduction.
Among baby backpack carriers, Deuter is the Prada or Versace
equivalent.
The Deuter Kid
Comfort III is well designed and highly recommended by
many users. It has all the features of any respectable baby backpack
carriers; such as an easy to adjust harness system, padded hip and
shoulder straps, baby safety harness, auto deploy kick stand and easily
washable fabrics.
But you shouldn't expect only the bare essentials from
Deuter.
Additional features like the rear-view mirror, adjustable baby seat
height, multiple pockets and weather protection gives Deuter the edge
over its competitors. The rear-view mirror is a simple but well thought
of innovation. While carrying your baby on your back, you
can't see how your baby is doing.
Most parents would prefer to keep their children in their sight if
possible. Seeing your baby lets you know whether he/she is safe and
comfortable; besides, why would you want to bring your baby out if
you¡¯re not going to interact with him/her?
The rear-view mirror solves all that by giving you a view of your baby
while carrying him/her around. Most baby backpack carriers are designed
for use with babies of a certain age or size. The baby may not be able
to see over your shoulder if he/she is too small for the cockpit or the
baby may sit too high up, increasing the strain on your back.
The adjustable baby seat from Deuter allows for the baby to sit
securely in the cockpit and continue to allow him/her to see beyond
your shoulder as he/she grows.
This baby backpack carrier also comes equipped with an
integrated sunshield that gives excellent cover from the sun and at the
same time, does not restrict your baby's scope of view. The
rain cover add-on accessory completes the weather protection by
providing all around shelter from rain and wind as well.
Despite its branded status, Deuter does have its recurring issues.
Deuter zippers have a reputation for being difficult to draw with just
one hand alone.
Two hands are a must for opening of Deuter's zippers. And
while the kick stand auto deploys itself, it doesn't
retract automatically upon closing. It can get quite difficult to close the kick stand when you already
have the backpack on your back. But at least, the fabric part of the
backpack carrier stays out of the dirt when sitting on the frame, and
that helps in keeping the backpack clean even when you put it down on
the ground.
The Deuter backpack also comes with a rear storage compartment and
zipper pocket for carrying additional items for a long trip.
This makes the Deuter Kid Comfort ideal for hiking with your baby, but
additional pockets mean added size and weight. The backpack carrier
itself weighs a whopping 6 Ibs, without your baby in it.
Despite its extra padding and ergonomic weight distribution design, it
can be very demanding to use this backpack for everyday needs in an
urban environment. The Deuter Kid Comfort III is a magnificent piece of
work, as one should expect from a reputable name.
But the backpack carrier doesn't come cheap either. It is
easily two to three times the price of next carrier out there. Of
course, if you aren't one to scrimp on baby products, you
shouldn't settle for anything other than the best.
