Features of Baby Backpack Carriers Part I

What are the features to look for in a good baby backpack carrier? Part I

There are several key features in a baby backpack carrier that you should look out for when considering a purchase. These are the main items that will affect the ease of use and durability of your backpack.

Backpack Material

Baby backpack carriers are commonly made of durable fabric such as nylon that is similar to fabrics used in suitcases. Depending on the durability of the carrier, fabrics

may be light weight or heavy duty. Heavy duty fabrics are more durable, but weigh more and add on to the backpack carrier's weight on top of the baby's weight.

Babies tend to be messy in habits and you should expect a fair bit of cleaning duty to be performed on your baby backpack carrier. Therefore the fabric material should be easy to clean, moisture resistant and easy to dry.

Baby back carrier typical comes with light-reflecting fabric or stripes to help drivers see you, especially from the back. These help to prevent accidents from occurring but don't really provide real protection against such. The best way to avoid traffic accidents is to take extra caution when crossing.

Fold ability

Baby back carrier can be bulky items to be carrying around. When not used to carry your baby, it is best that they can be folded away to save storage space or fit into a car. Some baby backpack carriers with frames can be folded flat for storage and set up easily again when needed.

Rest stand or Kickstand

Since backpack carriers are expected to be placed onto the ground from time to time while parents get some rest, they are equipped with kickstands. A kickstand is like the retractable bicycle stand that can be pushed out to support the backpack carrier when it is placed on the ground so that it can stand on its own.

The kickstand should be able to be locked firmly when not in use so that it doesn't hang awkwardly when moving around. Care should also be taken with the movable parts of the kickstand to prevent your fingers or your baby's fingers from getting pinched.

When the baby backpack carrier is on the ground with the kickstand open, it should be very stable and difficult to topple over. However, even with the kickstand open, one should not assume that the carrier can be left alone as a baby seat.

Additional Storage Space

Usually parents don't leave their house with their baby and nothing else. Baby trips always consist of a throng of other baby items and these all need to be carried somewhere. And since a baby backpack carrier is used, it seems natural to add on pockets on the backpack for keeping all the baby items as well.

Depending on your needs, you may need ample amounts of storage or you may only need a small pouch for the baby bottle. Based on what you will store within the pockets, requirements for pockets also differ. Storage of wet items will require plastic linings; loose items will need zippers or Velcro close tops. But remember, every item you add to the baby backpack carrier will add on to the total weight you need to carry on your back. Also take care not to exceed the maximum weight limit of the backpack carrier itself.

Weather Canopy

A baby can be very sensitive to the weather elements, especially at the eyes. Therefore there is a need to protect them from bad weather as well as the sun. Most framed baby backpack carriers come with a weather canopy or at least a weather canopy can be attached onto them as an accessory. Frameless baby backpack carrier, unfortunately do not have this capability. Not all weather canopies are the same. Some are large hoods that offer better cover; some are simply a small roof that shields the baby against rain.
